The story of female vampire Carmilla (also known in the story as Millarca and Mircalla, the Countess Karnstein, all anagrams of "Carmilla") is a Gothic work, noted as one of the first stories of vampire fiction. Carmilla is a story of a female vampire that preys on young women (noted in The Origins of the Queer Vampire), causing an epidemic in a Styrian town and terror in a young woman’s bedroom.
